GRIFFIN BROS ARE TAKING MOUNTAIN BOARDING TRACK TO THE EXTREME
Redhill Mountain Boarding Centre is sure to take off this year with the number of huge jumps it can now boast. Brothers Neil and Alistair Griffin started the extreme sports venue in 2005 as an off-shoot of the Maize Maze near Elton, which their parents run with the farmer who owns the land.
High-flyers Neil, 20, and his 18-year-old brother have been busy this spring getting the new mountain board and bike tracks finished.
Neil said: "It's going to be a good year. We know what people want to ride and we know how to build it. Last year we were dealing with more beginner-specific stuff. Now we've got something for every level of rider and, over the weeks and months, they can progress with their skills here."
The ex-Dene Magna School pupils built the course and jumps with a digger and more than a little help from their friends.
Neil said: "Last autumn a lot of bikers started turning up. We hadn't realised how popular it was going to be. We decided to do a bike track too but we're not mountain bikers so we had our friend come in and help design the course. I reckon it's going to take off this year. We've had so much interest in it."
The brothers are planning to create a festival vibe at the site and this summer they will offer camping from just £1 a night.
They are also planning downhill racing events for mountain bikers and a new course to cater for BMX riders.
"It will be a great place to come and watch the action even if someone isn't taking part," said Neil. "We're hoping to set up a summer bar as well so people can come out here and relax."
The centre is open on Saturdays and Sundays from 10.30am to 6.30pm. From July 15 to September 10 it will run daily between the same times before going weekend-only again until the end of October. For details, ring Neil on 07877 147636 or 01594 827007 or email EltonFarm @ Any-Mail.co.uk.
